Ramblings with John McCarthy, Radio Four

One of my favourite radio programmes is Ramblings, presented for some time now by Clare Balding on Radio Four. It is first aired on Thursdays and repeated on Saturdays early in the morning, just before Farming Today (my other favourite programme). At the end of one of these Ramblings listeners were invited to email in if they had a walk that they thought would be of interest to Clare and make a good programme. And I do – so I emailed……

I received the quick auto-reply thanking me for my interest and thought that might be it! However this was followed up by an email saying that the producers were interested and inviting me to write some more about me and why I love the walk that I do.

This was quickly followed up with a phone call saying that the walk and my story all sounded really lovely and that they thought it would make a great walk the only thing was that Clare wasn’t going to be doing all of the walks in the new series, and that there were going to be guest presenters. Would I mind walking with a guest presenter, and would I mind if that guest presenter was John McCarthy? Not only did I not mind I was delighted……

The producers and I exchanged a number of emails, agreed the date and that whatever the weather we would be walking. I invited my friend and colleague Ian Lock to walk with me, he’s a keen walker and lover of the South Downs and, like me, looks after a six mile stretch.

So it was that one very wet and windy Friday morning this October we – John, Ian and Karen the producer, and myself met in my kitchen and set off up the Downs – walked and talked, and enjoyed a great ‘walk and talk’ ……

We ended the walk talking about how by my responding to the invitation to listeners and following through on my passion for walking and talking, for sharing stories and for conversation, that we had all met and how glad we were to have done so.

The conversation was broadcast on Thursday 24th October in the afternoon on Radio Four, but you can listen to the archived version on the BBC iPlayer.
